Camera+ the perennial best seller among iPhone photography apps has just received a major update to version 3! Aside from a shinier app icon, they’ve added sharing features, support for importing multiple photos from your library into Camera+ at the same time, something they call Workflows which apparently let you decide if you want to shoot and edit later or shoot and edit now. They’ve also added the ability to lock focus and exposure, feature I’ve been really enjoying from the new Awesome Camera app, a competitor to Camera+ and in my opinion the best camera replacement app available a the moment. (I will post a full review of Camera Awesome soon, promise!)
Camera+ 3.0 also added APIs for other app developers to use. This will allow interaction with other apps so you could shoot with Camera+, do some edits, then pass the edited version to another app all without saving a version to the camera roll and having to then import in the other app. Tap Tap Tap has updated the Lightbox UI, and tuned up the Clarity filter – one of the most popular features of the Camera+ app.
The list of improvements and features goes on so be sure and check out the full write-up in the iTunes store while you are waiting for the download to finish. Enjoy!

I”ve been a devoted Camera+ user for some time, but just this past week found out about Camera Awesome. Without going into your full review, can you say briefly why CA is better than C+ in your opinion? What features does C+ still lack? And does the “awesome” feature really outdo the Camera+ Clarity filter? Thanks for any insights–I look forward to your review, too.

Hi David,
I recognize your IG name, glad to see you out here in the bigger world.
I’ll be perfectly honest with you, the differences between Camera+ and Awesome Camera are going to come down to user preference as is often the case when they are fairly evenly matched. In my full review I’ll cover in a little more detail what I like about Awesome Camera. To answer your specific questions the “Awesomizer” users the most excellent PerfectlyClear algorithm to do it’s thing. I always loved PerfectlyClear when it works but I gave up on it long ago because it basically took up so much memory it wouldn’t run if you had more than 2 other programs running in the background. Even on the latest and greatest iPhone 4S PerfectlyClear fails. To be able to get at it with Awesome Camera w/o the memory issues was a no-brainer for me. While I like Clarity in some situations, I find that it adds undesired artifacts to the image. I have not tried it since this update so perhaps that’s been fixed – I hear that is one thing they improved.
Awesome Camera is FAST. Faster than Camera+. It also has full res burst mode of 4 images and I really like the way they implemented it over Camera+. Both have very good filters that are rich and diverse. Awesome Camera’s pricing strategy is not to my taste so be aware of it before jumping in. The camera app itself is free though so I’d suggest you download it and give it a try. The worst you’ll loose is a little time playing around with it.
Thanks for the comments! Much appreciated.
